Master of Arts: Historical Theology
The Master of Arts in Historical Theology is an academic degree designed to develop competencies essential to the academic study of the history of Christian doctrine and spirituality in preparation for admission to a doctoral program and teaching at church-related colleges and seminaries. The program consists of 65 semester hours which emphasize the historical development of Christian doctrine and spirituality, the study of ancient languages, and the use of critical methodology in biblical and historical studies, plus a modern language exam and an M.A. Historical Theology comprehensive exam. The program has been designed around a core of basic biblical and theological studies, a historical theology specialization and advanced elective credits. Applicants for the Master of Arts in Historical Theology must possess a minimum 3.5 cumulative undergraduate grade point average from a regionally accredited baccalaureate institution. (The student must also have achieved a minimum 3.5 grade point average in any undergraduate coursework taken in biblical and theological studies.) A minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average is required for graduation; any student admitted to the Master of Arts in Historical Theology whose grade point average falls below 3.0 in any two semesters during the course of study may be dismissed from the program.
